The word “frugal” used to have a negative connotation to most people. It meant someone who was a cheapskate, or living a life without much of what gives people joy. Today, however, more and more people are needing to tighten their belts and become more frugal. To live a frugal life has become a goal to attain rather than avoid.

Here are 10 things you can do to live a more frugal lifestyle.

10 Tips For A Frugal Family

  1. Eating Out - Going out to eat can be expensive. If if you visit only cheap "fast food" places you still need to factor in the cost of gas driving there and the cost of your health. Make eating out an occasional treat rather than a frequent adventure.
  2. Clothing - Naturally, if you are the kind of person who adores signature and designer clothes, do not expect that there will be something left of your take home pay. Instead of being trendy, wear clothes that can easily be matched with your other clothes. To save even more money look at buying used clothing from local consignment shops.
  3. Buying Your Own Car -If you need to buy a new car be very careful. There a lot of dealerships trying to unload their stock of large, costly vehicles. What might seem like a good deal now could cost you later in heavy insurance fees and frequents trips to the gas station.
  4. Shopping for Groceries -For most food items there is little to no difference between the higher costs brands and the cheap ones. Stick to the generic or store brand items as much as possible. And don't forget to use your coupons!
  5. Family Outings - There are inexpensive ways to bond with your family and be entertained. Look to go to libraries, local parks, mall, picnics, visit friends and local church.
  6. Buying School Supplies - Stock school supplies at home and do not buy anything fancy. There are usually great deals that can be had before school begins.
  7. Be contented with what you have and try to live within what you earn.
  8. Plan your Child’s College Education - Teach them the ways to be independent and self-supporting by encouraging them to apply for scholarships and “on campus jobs”.
  9. Be Aware of your Financial Limitations - Before you spend a single dime make sure you know if it is in your budget and if you can really afford it. Even a great deal should be avoided if you cannot pay it off.
  10. Anticipate your Failures by Planning - Have always a budget plan so you would avoid impulsive buying.
